Child's Boat Bed |

Looking for a fun
project to make for that special little boat lover in your life?
This boat bed may be just what you are looking for! It is relatively
inexpensive and we used recycled drawers, plywood, #2 cedar for the
bed, a used clean crib mattress, and a non-working outboard motor
that we took the lower unit off of to make it safer. This was made
for our grandson, Auryn, when he was a little over 3 and he used it
until he was 5. It's now waiting for use by his 2 younger brothers. |

The base of the bed started as a rectangular base made of plywood in
which were cut four holes to accommodate the size of the drawers
salvaged from an old desk. Any size or number of drawers could be
used. |
|
The corners of the base were
reinforced with 2" x 2" stock, glued and screwed in place. Slats
were placed across the base bottom and the drawers rested on those.
Since this was a low budget project we didn't bother with drawer
slides although you could use them if you choose. |
|
The boat was built from a plywood
sheet cut to fit a few inches larger than the base, and also with a
slight bow to it on the long sides. Blocks were added to the four
sides so when the boat was put on the base it would not move around.
The sides of the boat were made from #2 cedar. The transom and bow
were angled out a bit to give it a "boatier" shape. |

A
hatch at the transom was added to store Auryn's fishing gear, toy boats
and other treasures. It was hinged for easier access. A bit more
reinforcing was added amidships. The open part of the bed
accommodates a crib mattress but a longer version could be made to
accept a larger one. |
|
Before it was even finished, Auryn
had to try it out for size and checks out all the features. He was
absolutely thrilled and wanted to take it home on the spot. |

A view of the back of the bed with
navy blue paint added to the base and the boat itself with varnish. |

The drawers were also painted and
multicolored fish shapes were added as drawer handles. |
|
The completed boat bed. We had an old non-working Evinrude motor,
removed the lower unit and screwed on the cover so it couldn't be
removed. Mounted on the transom, it could still swivel and the
tiller arm moved up or down. A perfect Christmas gift except for one
thing: he was in bed doing a little night boating and fishing long
after his bedtime. |
